1 Peter 2:9-10 (25.02.22)

1 Peter 2:9-10 (NIVUK)
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Yesterday morning as you no doubt did, I woke to the news of the Russian military action in Ukraine. How do we respond to that? What can we do to make a difference? On the face of it there is so little – in the grand scheme of things we are no one. But hang on a minute, haven’t we been looking at the fact that everybody counts this week? The wonderful truth is that in God’s eyes, we are someones, not no ones! And if we’re someones, royal priests in fact, then there is something we can do, and are called to do, and that is pray. We have the privileged position of being able to bring the Ukraine and the parties involved before God and ask him to intervene and bring peace. That’s not nothing, that’s important ambassadorial work.

Father, we bring the situation in the Ukraine to you and pray for your mercy, your intervention, your wisdom and your peace. Especially we pray that you’d be with those who are innocent bystanders caught up in a situation outside of their control or influence. Please, Father, bring peace where peace has been lost.
