Philippians 3:7-8 (NIVUK)
7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things….
It might be a cliche, but it doesn’t make it any less true. If our house was on fire, what would I run in and rescue? Would I rescue my guitar? My games? My laptop with everything on it? There’s no debate, these things are important to me, but, if the house was on fire, there’s only ever going to be one answer, I’d rush in and save my family. There’s no comparison. This is what Paul is trying to say here, of course there are other things that are important to him, of value to him, but in comparison to knowing Jesus, these pale in significance.
All I once held dear, built my life upon
All this world reveres, and wars to own
All I once thought gain I have counted loss
Spent and worthless now, compared to this
Knowing You, Jesus
Knowing You
There is no greater thing
