Psalm 8:1a (repeated in verse 9) NIVUK
For the director of music. According to gittith. A psalm of David.
1 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
I’ve kept the introduction to the psalm as a reminder that the psalms were never meant to be an untouched collection of fine art, but were the prayer/song book of God’s people; besides, I’d love to know what a gittith is, wouldn’t you! (Scholars suggest it’s a musical term of some sort.) From this mystery, we move to majesty, God’s majesty. Uniquely, God is sovereign throughout and over all the earth, no other power or authority matches his. All things on earth owe their origin to him, all power is but a reflection of his.
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
