Jonah 1:1-3 (NIVUK)
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 ‘Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.’
3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.
We’re looking at good news stories on Sundays for the rest of the Summer. The story of Jonah doesn’t seem like one to start with as God sends Jonah to speak to the Ninevites, a wicked people. It’s no wonder he runs away! How can being sent to speak to this cruel bunch end out well for him… Sometimes it is hard to remember that God is good, and all that God does is good.
Father, sometimes we see just with our biological eyes and not the eyes of faith. Help us to believe that you are always working for good in our lives and the lives of those around us, even when the appearances might seem to be to the contrary.
