John 2:3-4 (NIVUK)
3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, ‘They have no more wine.’
4 ‘Woman, why do you involve me?’ Jesus replied. ‘My hour has not yet come.’
If I called my Mum, ‘woman’, I’m not sure she’d be too impressed with me! This doesn’t quite sound like Jesus, does it. I suspect it says more about John the author than Jesus. What intrigues me more, however, is what Jesus goes on to say. ‘my hour has not yet come’. What’s Jesus talking about? What’s going to happen? Of course, we know where this story is headed – The Cross. Is John trying to tell us something about the Cross here?
Sometimes Father, we feel a little like Jesus here, wanting to do something significant for you, but the opportunity hasn’t presented itself yet. Help us, like Jesus here, not to forget to continue to do good in the meantime.
