Genesis 12:8-9
8 From there he went on towards the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.
9 Then Abram set out and continued towards the Negev.
A powerful aspect of the spirituality found in the Old Testament is their recognition of the power of physical symbols, such as the altars that Abram had a wonderful habit of making. These symbols are a physical act of thanksgiving which linger beyond the original occasion, acting as an ongoing reminder of what God had done for them, a reminder that reinforced their faith in their daily lives and called for continual celebration of God’s relationship with them. This can be a powerful way of worshipping today – I think the banner in Slipe Lane is a great example, I’m always explaining it to visitors and talking as a result about what God has done in our lives. What other symbols or reminders could we adopt today as a church? What could you use in your daily life? Here’s one…
Father, today my mug is a symbol of our relationship. As I fill it, I will remember the love you have poured into my life, as I drink it I will say thank you, and as I wash it, I will celebrate your grace.
