Genesis 12:17-20
17 But the Lord inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. ‘What have you done to me?’ he said. ‘Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, “She is my sister,” so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!’ 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.
Abram may have thought he’d got away with being ‘economic with the truth’; it doesn’t seem that anyone suspected Sarai as being his wife. But whilst those around him might have been oblivious, God was not – you cannot deceive God. Pharaoh may have been speaking, but God’s judgement lies behind his words, and perhaps a push to get Abram back to Canaan where he was meant to be.
Father, forgive us for those times when like Abram we’re more worried about what we can get away with than living virtuously. Today I want to do all things as if I’m doing them for you.
