Genesis 17:9-10 (NIVUK)
9 Then God said to Abraham, ‘As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: every male among you shall be circumcised.
Yesterday we read what Abraham and his descendents could expect from God, that he would make them fruitful, a vast family, that would become nations, that would have a land of their own, and that he would be their God That’s a lot. Today we read what God wanted of them. God simply wants the males to be circumcised. There seems to be an imbalance there! In New Testament terms, through Christ, God invites us into his family, to be part of his Kingdom, to be part of his blessing to the world, and have a hope for the future – are for now. All that he wants from us is that we circumcise our hearts, in other words, we set ourselves aside for him. Seems like a good deal to me.
Father, you have given us so much. I cannot give you the same, but I will try and give you what I can.
