Luke 2:46-49 (NIVUK)
46 And Mary said:
‘My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me –
holy is his name.
These are the opening verses of what has become known as the Magnificant, Mary’s ‘song’ celebrating what God is doing in her life. I love the way that she is aware of the enormous honour of being chosen to be the mother of Jesus, but her focus is not on herself, but God. It’s not about her, it’s about him, his grace, his holiness, his generosity, his work. This is not false humility, but recognising how much more than us God is.
I lift You high and bow down low
How high can You be? How low can I go?
I lift You high and bow down low
How high can You be? How low can I go?, oh Lord
(Matt Redman)
