Ezekiel 37:9-10 (NIVUK)
9 Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.”’ 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet – a vast army.
The Bible opens with the Spirit, the Breath of God, breathing life into creation as God speaks it into existence. Here in Ezekiel, Ezekiel is shown how God can speak a dead creation back into life. The opening chapter of John is written as a new Genesis, a new creation story, with the Word of God becoming flesh. Later in the same Gospel, he breathes new life into his followers, John’s equivalent of the day of Pentecost (John 20:22). One day as his people, he will breathe us into us again, raising us to new life in his fulfilled Kingdom.
Father, help us to be like Ezekiel and Jesus, breathing new life into those around us, as we share your love and power.
