Be Thou My Vision – Verse 5:
High King of heaven, Thou heaven’s bright Sun,
O grant me its joys after victory is won;
Great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be Thou my vision, O Ruler of all.
You might want to double check my counting up, but I reckon that in Matthew 6, Jesus refers to our reward 7 times, both as a warning, not to seek immediate reward from those around us as that fades, and as an incentive or promise, that if we put God first now and making pleasing him and serving others our priority, we will have a permanent reward with him to come. He concludes:
19 ‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21 (NIVUK)
So what is our reward? You could describe it as life in heaven, or peace or joy or and end to suffering and injustice, but I think the best description is simply life in God’s unobscured presence. He is our reward.
Father, be thou my vision, today and always.
