Genesis 22:11-12 (NIVUK)
11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, ‘Abraham! Abraham!’
‘Here I am,’ he replied.
12 ‘Do not lay a hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.’
Read today, this chapter raises all sorts of moral questions, which we explored on Sunday, but you can’t help reading it and wondering when we say that we put God first in our lives, how deeply we mean that. Thankfully, God does not ask that we sacrifice our children, but he does call us to be living sacrifices (Romans 12:1), putting aside our desires and priorities and replacing them with his. This is deeply challenging, but also deeply rewarding, as in doing so we are drawn into a deeper relationship with him.
Lord, help me to hold my life lightly and you tightly.
