John 4:13-14 (NIVUK)
13 Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’
Water is a fundamental biological need, we cannot live without it. When we’re lacking it, we thirst for it, our body yearns for it. Jesus uses this as a metaphor to reveal our fundamental need of him: when we’re not in a relationship with him, we yearn for him, and when we find him, when we accept him, this thirst is met completely.
‘You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you’ (Augustine)
