Luke 24:13-17 (NIVUK)
13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognising him.
17 He asked them, ‘What are you discussing together as you walk along?’
I’ve always thought these two disciples are a great example for us, of a living faith. The events of the last few days, Jesus’ death and reported resurrection, have made them realise that their previous thinking about faith and Jesus was wrong, and now they’re grappling with the dissonance between that understanding and their experiences. This is such an important habit to develop. It is through continual reflection and weighing up of scripture in light of our experiences, and our experiences in light of scripture, that we grow and deepen our faith (can I plug our Bible Study as a great place to do this?) The good news is that Jesus is keen to help us grow our faith, and through his Spirit comes alongside us in this journey.
Jesus draws near us by his Spirit today, and still asks, ‘what are you grappling with?’ What is your answer?
