Luke 24:25-27 (NIVUK)
25 He said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?’ 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
The Bible is a wonderful gift for us from God. At its heart, it’s all about Jesus – the creation of the world through Jesus, how it got spoilt meaning that we needed Jesus to put things right, God’s salvation plan leading up to the incarnation of Jesus, his life death and resurrection, the story of the early church who sought through the Spirit to continue his work, and his future return to complete his job of making all things new. If we want to know about Jesus, if we want a relationship with him through the Spirit, then this is the best place to turn. We do face a challenge, though, of putting to one side our preconceived ideas – just as the disciples did here. They weren’t able to see Jesus in the scriptures, because he didn’t fit what they were looking for.
Father, help me to hear what you are saying through the Bible. Help me through the Spirit to hear it afresh as I read it and explore it with others, and not be blinkered by my beliefs and expectations.
