John 4:27 (NIVUK)
27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, ‘What do you want?’ or ‘Why are you talking with her?’
Yesterday we thought about the first part of this chapter, Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. Today we continue the story as the disciples return and catch Jesus in conversation with her. They were surprised – she is a woman, and it’s not the done thing for a man to chat to a woman outside of their family (in their context). It makes me wonder how open we are to being surprised by Jesus – there is always the risk of our believing we’ve got Jesus understood and being oblivious to when he does something outside of our limited expectations. A god who is unable to surprise us is too small to be God.
Spirit, give me an inquisitive mind that is always open to what you are doing, even if it is unexpected.
