John 4:28-30 (NIVUK)
31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, ‘Rabbi, eat something.’
32 But he said to them, ‘I have food to eat that you know nothing about.’
33 Then his disciples said to each other, ‘Could someone have brought him food?’
34 ‘My food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
Jesus loved to be a little bit cryptic and to provoke his disciples into thought! Food they knew nothing about? What on earth is he talking about?…
The answer is doing God’s will, doing the work his Father gave him to do. Of course, doing God’s work isn’t really a source of protein, carbohydrates and vitamins, but is nourishing in a different way. Doing God’s will is what we’re made for and when we do it we can experience being filled, or fulfilled. Doing God’s will is satisfying.
Father, give us this day our daily bread – both food on our plates and the opportunity to serve you.
