Mark 2:13-14 (NIVUK)
13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
I love the way in these two verses that Jesus has time both for the crowd and for the individual. He’s busy teaching the crowd, and as he walks with the crowd milling around him, he spots Levi and calls him to follow him. We know that for many, that would have been an unpopular move, as a tax collector, Levi was taking money from the poor and giving it to the rich, taking money from the Jews and giving it to the occupiers of their land, the Romans. So how does Jesus spot Levi and know to call him? As a local, chances are he already knew Levi; maybe he’d already seen potential in him. I’m convinced it was more than that. I believe this is an example of Jesus being open to the Spirit’s prompting in the midst of the busyness of his life.
Spirit, help me to be open to your guidance in the midst of the day ahead. In my plans and work, may I be open to your plans and your work.
