John 6:1-4 (NIVUK)
1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing those who were ill. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near.
Signs are a key concept in John’s Gospel. He presents Jesus’ miracles as a series of events or symbols that reveal who he is. HIs concern is not so much with the dramatic nature of the miracle itself, but the person that they point to. Put together, the signs in John’s Gospel shout out to those prepared to see them, that Jesus is the Messiah, God’s chosen leader, who was going to usher in God’s salvation and Kingdom. What experiences of God’s work have you had in your life? What do they say about the wo God is and what he is like?
Lord, thank you for the ways you have revealed yourself in my life. Help me be a signpost, pointing others to you.
