Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Revelation 1:9-10 (26.06.23)

Revelation 1:9-10 (NIVUK)
9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet…

I used to play trombone at school. It was a fun instrument to play, with a range of styles of music possible from swing, to military marches, to classical and jazz. Of course, what we all wanted to play was the theme tune to Johnny Briggs (‘The Acrobat’, I bet you can’t listen without reaching for your air-trombone!) Like the trumpet, one thing all brass instruments have in common is the ability to sound a fanfare or to demand attention. John describes Jesus voice as being like a trumpet, this is what comes to my mind as I try to picture what he’s talking about; Jesus has an arresting voice that captures attention and carries authority and the sense that something special is about to be revealed.

Spirit, help me to hear Jesus’ voice today over the noise of my workplace, the playground and family, and to be alert to what he says.
