Matthew 6:24-25 (NIVUK)
24 ‘No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
25 ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
On Sunday we thought about the well known passage in the Sermon on the Mount about not worrying about our lives, but instead trusting in God and focussing on serving him. This passage starts with an important word that shouldn’t be ignored, ‘Therefore…’ (25). Going backward to verse 24 we can see what Jesus is referring to: the principle that we can only serve one master, we can either serve God or money, not both. Being worried about things other than God, including our physical needs, is to make them our master. As Christians, Christ is our Master, being concerned about serving him is our primary calling.
Lord, there are many things that call for our attention, but we know that you deserve and should be our primary concern. Help us to focus on you.
