Bible Notes

Psalm 119:104 (21.07.23)

Psalm 119:104 (NIVUK)
104 I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path.

Precept isn’t a word we tend to use very often, so I thought I ought to double check I understood it correctly. According to Google it means ‘a general rule intended to regulate behaviour or thought’. Does this mean that God is trying to regulate our behaviour? Like yesterday, I don’t think so, at least not in a dictatorial way. He is not forcing us a better way, instead he is giving us the information we need to make better choices. His teaching is designed to give us understanding; a better understanding of ourselves, of our world, and of course ultimately God himself, so that we might have the wisdom ourselves to choose the paths that are better for us, rather than the paths which if we could see clearly are wrong paths, paths that cause us and others harm.

Father, help me to see more clearly, so that I can live more fruitfully and love more effectively.
