Mark 14:35-36 (NIVUK)
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 ‘Abba, Father,’ he said, ‘everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.’
Sometimes Jesus prayed and God acted to protect or provide for him. He worked miracles, he slipped away from angry crowds, and his words attracted followers and deflected his opponents. In Gethsemane, he experienced the other side of having God as his Father, as God instead said, trust in me despite how things seem, despite what you experience. The same is true for us. Sometimes he will take our cup away from him, other times he will ask us to trust in him, believing that our Father knows best.
Spirit, deepen my relationship with our Father so that come what may I will follow Jesus’ example and follow him.
