Mark 10:17-18 (NIVUK)
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. ‘Good teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’
18 ‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good – except God alone.
A first glimpse of these verses and you might wonder what they’ve got to do with ‘temptation’, but take note of what Jesus says, ‘no one is good – except God alone’. Isn’t this critical when we reflect on temptation. Jesus is making the point right at the start of their encounter that none of us are good, all of us succumb to temptation and stray away from a faithful relationship with God. Only Jesus is able to remain faithful to him.
How does it affect how you see yourself and others, when you reflect on this revelation? Does it change your expectations and standards?
