Psalm 121:1-2 (NIVUK)
1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains –
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Having just come from walking up the highest point in Northern Ireland, my thoughts haven’t quite left the peaks, and so I’d step back from the parables and head up Psalm 121. The opening verse could be heard in a number of ways. Are these imposing peaks that constantly dominate the psalmist’s horizon, threatening him, which he needs help to overcome? Or has the psalmist turned to them for help – they can be inspiring or feel like a bridging place between ‘heaven’ and earth, even objects of worship in their own right? However we read it, the psalm draws our eyes higher, beyond the mountains to the God who created them and is even more mighty and powerful.
Father, no-one and nothing comes close to your scale and majesty!
