Hebrews 2:10-11 (NIVUK)
10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. 11 Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.

There are various attempts going on at the moment to get rockets successfully into space. When these are deemed to be ‘safe’, they will be manned with a human crew, and who knows, maybe soon we will see a person on the moon again. These astronauts will be pioneers, travelling in our name, leading the way into the unknown where virtually no one has been before. Here, the writer of Hebrews uses similar language to describe Jesus. He came from heaven to be our pioneer, to go ahead of us as our representative, to lead the way to our being made holy. This is a dangerous mission, and involved him putting aside his safety and suffering for us, suffering so that ultimately our suffering will end.

Thank you Jesus for coming to be our pioneer!
