This week we’re going to be tracing Sunday’s theme of rest through the passages and stories that Hebrews 4 alludes to.
Psalm 95:1-2
1 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.
It’s worth reading the whole of Psalm 95 as we did a couple of weeks ago. It starts with this call to worship (1-2), then reminds us of God creating the world (3-5), before pointing out that this great creator is also our compassionate shepherd, guiding us to rest and providing for us in his ‘pastures’ (6-7). It finishes with the verses quoted in Hebrews 4 (8-11), which look back at the contrasting fortunes of Moses and Joshua, to encourage us to keep our eyes fixed on God in trust and obedience, even if we do sometimes fail, rather than to turn away.
Thank you Lord for your wonderful provision, your gift of this amazing world and your gifts of meeting our needs and rest. Lord I will do my best to keep looking to you, my Good Shepherd.
