Hebrews 5:7 (NIVUK)
7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
Reading this, Jesus’ prayers in Gethsemane immediately came to mind as he pleaded God for another way. But in context, I wonder if these verses refer not to his pleading for himself, but his pleading for us (this could of course include Gethsemane). If it does, then the writer to the Hebrews is showing that it wasn’t just his qualifications that made him appropriate to be our representative before God, but his life – he lived as a priest, praying for us and standing before the Father on our behalf. What’s more, his prayers for us were heard and answered.
Jesus, thank you that you gave and give everything for us – what love!
