Matthew 7:24-27 (20.03.24)

Matthew 7:24-27 (NIVUK)
24 ‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.’

What does having our hope in God’s person and purpose (Hebrews 6) look like? If we change the metaphor to his teaching being a rock rather than him being an anchor, perhaps this well-known parable gives us an insight. Hope can sound like something that is insubstantial, or to simply do with being optimistic. Here, Jesus’ makes the point that it only counts if it takes on concrete form in a life lived out in response to God: hope is just as much about what we do as what we feel/think/believe.

Jesus, you are my hope and I want to build my life on you.
