Luke 19:45-48 (NIVUK)
45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 ‘It is written,’ he said to them, ‘“My house will be a house of prayer”; but you have made it “a den of robbers”.’
47 Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
Sometimes I find myself wandering what Jesus would make of our supermarkets if he wandered along the Easter themed merchandise and shelves stacked high of chocolate eggs today! But before we complain about the commercialisation of Easter, let’s pause and reflect that his grumbling was reflected at his fellow Jews who had through their attitudes and practices had prohibited those outside Judaism from coming into the Temple to worship. Do we do the same through our traditions and practices? What might Jesus overturn if he came amongst us?
Jesus, help us to be aware of the barriers we build up between others and you through how we do church and practice our faith.
