Luke 22:31-32 (NIVUK)
31 ‘Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.’
Despite his protestations that he will follow Jesus anywhere, Jesus knows that Peter will let him down – and here again we see Christ’s grace. He recognises that he will turn away, but prays that his faith will not depart him, and that he will turn back. More than this, he prays that Peter will take on responsibility for caring for and leading his ‘brothers’. Despite knowing our failings and weaknesses, Jesus does not give up on us – he will not give up on you – instead in continues to give us opportunities and responsibility. He is concerned with more than just the bottom line, he is also concerned with us as people, nurturing and developing us, just as he calls Peter to do himself.
Thank you Jesus for the privilege of working for you. I don’t always get it right, sorry. Thank you that despite this, you’re willing to give me another chance because of the value we have in your eyes.
