Hebrews 8:7-8 (NIVUK)
7 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8 But God found fault with the people…
These two lines reveal the problem with the Law or the Old Covenant. Whilst the content and instructions of the Old Covenant were good, the problem was never that the Law wasn’t good or not good enough, it was that we weren’t able to live the life it called for because we are flawed, self-centred and tempted to veer off course like a wonky shopping trolley. Good instructions can’t change that. What was needed was a covenant that could deal with our brokenness: not just describe how to live well but help us to do so. Something better was needed, in fact the best that God had to offer…
Thank you Father that you weren’t content to simply tell us what to do, but sent your Son and then your Spirit to enable us to live that life.
