John 21:4-6 (NIVUK)
4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realise that it was Jesus.
5 He called out to them, ‘Friends, haven’t you any fish?’
‘No,’ they answered.
6 He said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
I loved Joe’s comment on Sunday on the disciples’ terse disgruntled ‘no’. It has been one of those days. Fishing is what they do, and yet they have nothing to show for their efforts. I wonder if John is hinting at the fruitlessness that can come when we don’t work with and for Jesus. And yet, Jesus is there waiting for them, even in this seemingly mundane activity – as he will be for us through the Spirit, whatever activity we might be involved in this week. Jesus is ready to transform the mundane to the divine.
Jesus, remind us this week to invite you into our daily activity. Fill our nets so we might be fruitful for you.
