Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Hebrews 12:28-29 (21.06.24)

Hebrews 12.28-29
“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”

The phrase ‘let us be thankful’ in v.28 would be more accurately translated ‘let us have grace’; in context the writer is probably saying ‘let us hold on to God’s grace’. This exhortation requires a more active response than just being thankful – we must appropriate the grace God offers and not let it go, because only by his grace can we serve as we should. Note also that ‘we are receiving’ is present continuous tense – not ‘we have received’, not ‘we will receive’, but ‘we are receiving’ continually, day by day entering into more of the blessing that God has for us, and becoming an ever more effective testimony to his grace.

Restore, O Lord,
The honour of Your name,
In works of sovereign power
Come shake the earth again;
That men may see
And come with reverent fear
To the living God,
Whose kingdom shall outlast the years.
