Hebrews 11:1-3 (NIVUK)
1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
Hebrews 11 is famous for its definition of faith in the opening verse, and the gallery of faithful figures it describes to encourage its readers and remind them that that have something these heroes did not – they know Jesus. What is often missed is verse 3. I find it fascinating that Hebrews connects faith and creation like this, highlighting that our faith puts God first above all things, and celebrates that God made not just us but the whole of the universe – everything we have and are and see ultimately derives from him.
Try and carry this thought with you today, that everything you see ultimately comes from God. How does this change how you see it and how you interact with it?
