Romans 8:37-39 (30.07.24)

Romans 8:37-39 (NIVUK)
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Having started our week looking at love with some song lyrics, I need feel I have to press on! Today’s offering is one from when Kate and I first met, The Cure’s ‘Friday I’m In Love‘:

I don’t care if Monday’s blue
Tuesday’s grey and Wednesday too
Thursday, I don’t care about you
It’s Friday, I’m in love
Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Oh, Thursday doesn’t even start
It’s Friday, I’m in love

What’s this song about? I suspect it’s about the highs of being in love with someone helping you get through the grey and difficult days. It could even be that love transforms these days, so that everyday is Friday, the start of the weekend. I very much doubt it was in Robert Smith’s mind when he wrote it, but the lyrics bring to my mind Paul’s words in Romans about how nothing can separate us from the love of God, nothing at all, not even Monday mornings, illness, debt, or feeling weary and worn down, no nothing. God’s love in Christ is bigger than all these things. Knowing that can help us not just get through the week, but can transform it.

Father, how wonderful it is to know that you love us no matter what! Help us to choose love, no matter what we’re feeling or what day it is.
