Psalm 63:1-5 (NIVUK)
1 You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 I will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
SinĂ©ad O’Connor has been in the news this week because of a waxwork made in her likeness that maybe wasn’t as like her as hoped. Her most famous song (written by Prince) was ‘Nothing Compares 2 U‘. In this song she expresses her anguish at having lost the one she loved and finding that nothing can take his place: ‘Nothing compares, nothing compares to you.’ Finding God is like this. In Psalm 63, as in many Psalms, the Psalmist expresses the wonder of knowing God’s love and their longing for it when God seems absent or distant. Nothing can take his place.
Lord, nothing compares, nothing compares to you!
