John 3:16-17 (NIVUK)
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
An unexpected TV hit over the last few years, The Repair shop is all about craftsmen and women taking much loved items and restoring them from their broken and worn state, and lovingly making them as new again. Sometimes these items have financial value, often they don’t, but always there’s a story about why they are of significance to the person who brings them. I don’t think Simon touched directly upon today’s verses in his interview last Sunday, but they lie at the heart of faith and mission. It’s like The Repair Shop, only God is both the person bringing the loved item and the person restoring it. He loves this world that he has made but it has become worn and weary and broken. Rather than tossing it away, God sees it with love and Father, Son and Spirit takes it and restores it. Our faith is in their love, our mission is joining theirs.
Take a moment to think about your world. What do you love about it? Give thanks. What is broken? Pray for its repair and for how you may be a part of that.
