Psalm 130:1-2 (NIVUK)
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
2 Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.
At the heart of prayer is a calling out to God believing that he is gracious and merciful towards us and will listen to us. The depths in this Psalm speaks, I think, of being in a dark or desperate place. It is honest, but despite this it is hopeful, it is a cry that believes it will be answered. It could also be read to speak of the distance between us and God. If God is so far from us not physical distance, but moral character or nature), why should he listen to us? We cry out, though, because we believe he does and will because of who he is.
Father, we call out to you today, believing in your grace.
