2 Chronicles 1:8-10 (NIVUK)
8 Solomon answered God, ‘You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. 9 Now, Lord God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth. 10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?’

God being faithful to his promises is a theme found throughout Chronicles. Here we’re reminded of a promise kept, God promised Abraham that he would make him the father of a great nation, and look, Solomon is king of a ‘people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth’, and a promise yet to fulfilled, that David’s son would build the Temple. Solomon can have hope that God will fulfil the latter as he was faithful in the former, and so he actively aligns his life around it, seeking to serve that purpose and asking God for help in that.

Father, you have promised to reconcile all things to yourself in Christ, to make all things new. Because of who you are and what you’ve done, we believe you’ll keep this promise. Like Solomon, help us to align our lives around serving this great hope.
