Leviticus 23:22 (NIVUK)
22 ‘When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field when you reap, nor shall you gather any gleaning from your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger: I am the Lord your God.’
Over the week we’ve been thinking about the scope of harvest in the Bible, from the harvest of food, to character and to people. Today’s passage from Leviticus is a wonderful reminder that just as harvest shields us from idolatry as in thanksgiving we prioritise God, it also encourages us to be alert to the needs of those around us. Why? Because that is who God is, the God who is generous and compassionate, and as we give thanks for our harvest, we are reminded of this and find it echoed in our lives.
Father, thank you for the harvest. Thank you that in your compassion you give to us abundantly. Help us to reflect this in living generous lives too.
