Deuteronomy 8:3 (NIVUK)
…man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Of course, as the Bread of the Presence was laid on the tables in the Temple before God as a thanksgiving for God’s provision, the Israelites would have remembered these words from Deuteronomy, which Jesus famously quoted when he was being tempted by Satan in Matthew 4:1-4. They knew that they needed more that food for their nourishment, they needed God’s Word as well. The same is true for us – hence these notes! We give thanks for bread and also for God’s written word, the Bible, and for his living word, the Son, who came and walked amongst us.
Father, each day we eat. Thank you for our food. Help us to get into the habit each day of digesting your Word as well, that we might hear from you.
