2 Chronicles 5:1-3 (NIVUK)
1 When all the work Solomon had done for the temple of the Lord was finished, he brought in the things his father David had dedicated – the silver and gold and all the furnishings – and he placed them in the treasuries of God’s temple. 2 Then Solomon summoned to Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs of the Israelite families, to bring up the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Zion, the City of David. 3 And all the Israelites came together to the king at the time of the festival in the seventh month.
Yesterday Tim reflected upon these verses in his sermon, identifying the importance and power of worshipping in unity – all Israel came together for this occasion. There’s another dimension to this. It’s not just that they all gathered, a horizontal unity if you like, they also acted in vertical unity: looking back to what had gone before when Solomon’s Father David had prepared the way and dedicated the silver, gold and furnishings. We similarly do not follow God alone, but are part of a great movement across the world, past and present.
Father, help us to play our part in this great movement, and to prepare the way for those who are to follow.
