2 Chronicles 5:11-12 (NIVUK)
11 The priests then withdrew from the Holy Place. All the priests who were there had consecrated themselves, regardless of their divisions. 12 All the Levites who were musicians – Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun and their sons and relatives – stood on the east side of the altar, dressed in fine linen and playing cymbals, harps and lyres. They were accompanied by 120 priests sounding trumpets.
Music has always been part of the worship of God’s people, an expression of our emotions as well as our thoughts. Reading these verses, the names of the musicians seemed familiar, but where from? Not the charts, but the Psalms. They all figure in the introductory phrases before the Psalms begin, Asaph in particular (see Psalms 50 & 73-83, all of which are attributed to him). It strikes me that they were the celebrity worship leaders of their day. I wonder what they would have thought if they had realised that we would still be using their lyrics in our worship today!
Father, we join our voices with those throughout the millennia to worship you.
