Bible Notes

2 Chronicles 8:18-19 (29.10.24)

2 Chronicles 6:18-19 (NIVUK)
18 ‘But will God really dwell on earth with humans? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple that I have built! 19 Yet, Lord my God, give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence.

As you know, I love camping. One of the challenges of camping is trying to pack a tent back in the bag it came from, or a sleeping bag for that matter. It often seems a physical impossibility, with the contents slipping and sliding, and always bulging out somewhere! It is a matter of great triumph when finally you manage to manoeuvre them back in. Solomon knew that if God was truly god, there was no way he could fit in the Temple, or for that matter dwell on earth. He cannot be confined – theologically speaking, everything is in God, never the other way around. This makes it all the more amazing that God should listen to our prayers when we are so unimaginably insignificant in comparison with him.

Almighty God, we can’t get our heads around why you should care one jot for us, and yet, Father, you listen to our prayers, Jesus, you agreed to be born as one of us, and Spirit, you lived within us.
