Psalm 133:1-3 (NIVUK)
1 How good and pleasant it is
when God’s people live together in unity!
2 It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
3 It is as if the dew of Hermon
were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,
even life forevermore.
Traditionally the 5th of November is celebrated as Fireworks Night in England, the day when we remember the foiled plot of Guy Fawkes to blow up the Houses of Parliament. But behind this real-life thriller’ is a story Christian disunity, Protestants vs Catholics. In contrast, time and time again, the Bible lifts up the high value God sets on unity amongst his people. Psalm 133 compares unity to the oil used to anoint Aaron the priest, and dew in a dry and hot place. Maybe these pictures don’t speak to us with quite the same strength or relevance – I wonder what image you might use?
Thank you Father for the unity that you have given us as a church. Help us to value and protect it.
