Micah 5:2 (NIVUK)
2 ‘But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times.’
On Sunday I suggested that the ruler from ancient times was King David. That is of course true, Micah is saying that the coming ruler is a second David, one like that ancient king of their glory days. Perhaps there is a hint of something more here. We know this is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, David’s descendent. Could the term ‘ancient’ as used here, not just look back to David, but also hint at Jesus’ pre-incarnation existence? As God, he has always been.
Jesus, thank you that you stepped into our world from eternity, entering time and experiencing aging and death for us.
