Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Micah 5:6-7 (13.12.24)

Micah 5:6-7 (NIVUK)
5 And he will be our peace
when the Assyrians invade our land
and march through our fortresses.
We will raise against them seven shepherds,
even eight commanders,
6 who will rule the land of Assyria with the sword,
the land of Nimrod with drawn sword.
He will deliver us from the Assyrians
when they invade our land
and march across our borders.

So much of the message of Advent and the Old Testament prophecies looking to Jesus’ coming, is quite rightly to do with what he does and achieves. These two verses, however, bring out an interesting aspect of this. Micah says that he will be our peace, but then describes how this is achieved through the seven shepherds and eight commanders. It might be Jesus’ work and accomplishment, but we have a part to play in it too.

Spirit, help us to be peacemakers for Christ, help us to be reconcilers, and comfort givers. Help us to play our part in bringing in God’s Kingdom.
