John 2:1-5 (NIVUK)
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, ‘They have no more wine.’
4 ‘Woman, why do you involve me?’ Jesus replied. ‘My hour has not yet come.’
5 His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’

As Dzifa pointed out on Sunday, Jesus was a people person who got involved in the life of his community. He’s the kind of person you’d want to invite to your wedding or party, the kind of person people wanted to be with and to be around. What always catches me, however, with these verses is that very last phrase, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ There are certain lines in the Bible that speak with an immediacy straight into our lives as readers, and for me, this is one of them; it’s as if John is actually speaking to us, not the servants.

Spirit, help me to hear what Jesus says today, and help me to be obedient and to do whatever he says.
