John 2:6-8 (NIVUK)
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from eighty to a hundred and twenty litres.
7 Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.’

In John it pays to be alert to what he is trying to say through the details, he is a master craftsman and little is a throw away comment or surplus text. The fact that the jars Jesus tells the servants to pour the water into are those used for ceremonial washing is not insignificant. John is trying to say that Jesus has come to wash us clean, but in a new and better way? What is that? That’s what the Gospel builds up to, John is currently just preparing the way.

Jesus, you bring a new covenant, new life, new hope, new cleansing. You are making all things new. Help me to be open to the new you wish to work in my life.
